Travelling in Himachal Pradesh

परिचय

Himachal Pradesh stacks four Himalayan ranges between the Punjab plains and Tibet. It holds Shimla's colonial ridge and its UNESCO toy train, Manali's apple valleys, the Dalai Lama's home at McLeod Ganj, paragliding at Bir Billing, and the high cold desert of Spiti with monasteries at Key and Tabo above 3,000 metres.

Himachal Pradesh compresses an enormous range of country into a state you can cross in two days. In the south, Shimla keeps its Ridge, Christ Church of 1857 and the Kalka-Shimla Railway, a 96-kilometre narrow gauge line with 102 tunnels that has been a World Heritage Site since 2008. The Kullu valley runs north through apple orchards to Manali, and the Atal Tunnel, opened in 2020 and just over nine kilometres long, now carries traffic under Rohtang to Lahaul year-round. Beyond it lies Spiti: Key Monastery stacked on its hill, Tabo founded in 996 CE with its earthen murals, Chandratal at about 4,300 metres, and villages where barley is threshed by hand. Kinnaur adds Kalpa's view of Kinner Kailash and Chitkul, the last village before the Tibet border. In the west, McLeod Ganj holds the Tsuglagkhang complex and the Triund trek, and Bir Billing is one of the world's better paragliding sites. Signature journeys are the Shimla-Kinnaur-Spiti-Manali circuit and a Dharamshala and Bir week.
