Akbar moved his court to Agra in 1558, and for the next century the city on the Yamuna was the richest in the empire. Agra Fort, his red sandstone citadel, was reworked in white marble by Shah Jahan, who spent his last years imprisoned in its Musamman Burj looking downriver at the tomb he had built for Mumtaz Mahal. That tomb is the Taj Mahal, completed around 1653 by some 20,000 workers, and no amount of familiarity blunts the first sight of it through the Great Gate at sunrise, when the marble is grey, then pink, then white.
Give it two hours, walk the raised plinth, and look closely at the pietra dura flowers and the Quranic calligraphy that grows larger as it climbs so it reads evenly from the ground. Cross the river in the afternoon to Itimad-ud-Daulah, the small jewel-box tomb of Nur Jahan's father that first used marble inlay on this scale, and end at Mehtab Bagh, the moonlight garden aligned with the Taj on the opposite bank. Old Agra is worth a morning: Kinari Bazaar's wedding lanes, the Jama Masjid, the petha shops, and Akbar's own tomb at Sikandra with its blackbuck-grazed gardens.
Agra is loud and hustling, and the touts are persistent, but a day planned around light, with a guide who knows the Mughal story, is one of India's great days out.

How to reach Agra
Delhi's IGI Airport is 230 km away by the Yamuna Expressway (about 3 hours); Agra Cantt station is served by the Gatimaan and Shatabdi expresses, and Agra's own Kheria airport has limited flights.
Airport pickups, station transfers and the driver for the days here are all part of what we arrange — including the hour you should leave, which is usually earlier than you think.
Travel tips from our trips
- The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays; gates open 30 minutes before sunrise and the east or west gate is quicker than the south.
- Book Taj tickets online through the ASI portal; the main mausoleum needs an extra ticket and shoe covers are included.
- Tripods, food and large bags are not allowed inside the Taj; carry only a phone, camera and water.
- Full-moon night viewing runs on five nights each month except Fridays and during Ramzan; tickets are limited and sold a day ahead.
- Hire a government-licensed guide and refuse anyone who steers you towards an emporium.
