Travelling in Ladakh

परिचय

Ladakh is high-altitude desert between the Karakoram and the Great Himalaya, where villages farm barley beside glacier-fed streams. Monasteries at Thiksey, Hemis, Alchi and Lamayuru hold centuries of Tibetan Buddhist practice, Pangong Tso stretches 134 kilometres into Tibet, and Hanle's dark skies are protected for astronomy.

Ladakh became a union territory in 2019, but its rhythms are far older. Leh sits at about 3,500 metres, and everything begins with two days of acclimatisation before the passes: Khardung La at roughly 5,360 metres towards Nubra, Chang La towards Pangong. The monasteries are the cultural spine. Thiksey rises in white tiers like a small Potala and keeps a fifteen-metre Maitreya; Hemis, the largest and richest, holds its masked Tsechu in June or July; Alchi, founded around the eleventh century on the Indus, preserves Kashmiri-style murals that survive nowhere else. Nubra pairs Hunder's sand dunes and double-humped Bactrian camels with Turtuk, a Balti village that only became Indian in 1971. Pangong Tso lies at about 4,350 metres, changing colour through the day, and Tso Moriri sits higher and quieter at 4,522 metres. Hanle, at around 4,500 metres, hosts India's first dark sky reserve and a working observatory. Roads from Manali and Srinagar open roughly from late May to October. Signature journeys run Leh, Nubra, Pangong and Tso Moriri.

त्योहार

A household altar being prepared with butter lamps and barley offerings for Losar, the Tibetan new yearFeb

February or early March on the Tibetan lunar new year, marked in Sikkim, Tawang and the Tibetan settlements. Ladakh keeps its own Losar two months earlier, in late December or early January.

Losar

The Buddhist new year of the high Himalaya, kept in deep winter with butter lamps, masked cham dances and barley beer. Ladakh runs two months ahead on a centuries-old royal decree, so Leh's old town fills with fire processions while Sikkim and Tawang wait for February.

Hemis Monastery in Ladakh, where masked cham dances fill the courtyard each summerJun

The tenth and eleventh days of the fifth month of the Tibetan calendar, which fall in late June or July. Dates shift by a few weeks each year and are announced by the monastery.

Hemis Festival

Ladakh's largest monastic festival, held in the stone courtyard of Hemis Gompa about 45 km southeast of Leh at roughly 3,600 m. Over two days monks in brocade robes and painted masks dance the cham for Guru Padmasambhava, while villagers picnic on the terraces above.

Ladakhi Thukpa

A broth of hand-pulled wheat noodles with mutton or vegetables, spring onion and a little local chilli, ladled out steaming at 3500 metres. Ladakhis eat it as a full meal, often after skyu and before butter tea. The kitchens along Changspa Lane in Leh serve it from late morning until the shops close.
