The place
परिचय
Karnataka holds more protected monuments than almost any Indian state: Hampi's Vijayanagara ruins, the Chalukyan temples of Badami and Pattadakal, and the Hoysala carving of Belur and Halebidu. Beyond them lie Coorg's coffee estates, Bandipur's tigers, Gokarna's beaches, and a Bengaluru that pours the country's best filter coffee.
Karnataka gives you six centuries of temple building and a coastline in the same trip. Hampi is the set piece: about 4,100 surviving monuments across a granite boulder field on the Tungabhadra, where the Virupaksha gopuram still hosts daily puja, the Vittala temple's stone chariot has its own place on the fifty-rupee note, and sunrise from Matanga Hill lights the whole valley. Earlier Chalukyan experiments are at Badami's cave temples, Aihole and the World Heritage cluster of Pattadakal. The Hoysalas took it further at Belur and Halebidu, where soapstone friezes wrap the plinth in bands of elephants, horsemen and dancers, listed by UNESCO in 2023. Mysuru's Indo-Saracenic palace is lit by nearly a hundred thousand bulbs during Dasara. The Western Ghats add Coorg's coffee and cardamom estates, Jog Falls dropping over 250 metres on the Sharavathi, and the tiger reserves of Bandipur and Nagarhole. On the coast, Gokarna's Om and Kudle beaches sit below Murudeshwar's towering Shiva. Signature journeys link Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hassan and Hampi.

A crisp dosa smeared inside with red chilli and garlic chutney before the potato palya goes in, folded and pushed off the griddle under a slick of ghee. Mylari in Mysuru makes a soft, butter-heavy version; Vidyarthi Bhavan in Bengaluru, open since 1943, makes the crisp one. Both come with coconut chutney.
