The East India Company leased this ridge from the Chogyal of Sikkim in 1835 and built a sanatorium; within a generation Darjeeling was the summer capital of Bengal, ringed by tea gardens planted with China bush stock. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, opened in 1881 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, still hauls its blue B-class steam engines up gradients so tight the track loops over itself at Batasia, where a Gorkha war memorial stands in a garden of dahlias. A day here begins in the dark.

Jeeps leave for Tiger Hill at around four so you can stand at 2,590 metres and watch the sun hit Kanchenjunga's five summits before it reaches the valleys, and on the clearest winter mornings Everest shows as a small tooth to the west. Afterwards the road drops past Ghum Monastery, with its fifteen-foot Maitreya, and returns to town for tea at a Chowrasta terrace. Spend the middle of the day at the Happy Valley estate watching leaves being withered and rolled, or at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, where Tenzing Norgay taught, next door to the red pandas and snow leopards of the Padmaja Naidu zoo.

Evenings are for Nehru Road, momo steamers fogging the windows, and the bell at Observatory Hill's Mahakal temple carrying over the ridge.

Momos

Pleated dumplings of pork, chicken or vegetable steamed in a bamboo basket and served with a bowl of clear soup and a chutney of dalle khursani, the round Sikkimese chilli. Eat them on MG Marg in Gangtok or at a Darjeeling tea-house, and drink the soup between mouthfuls to keep the cold off.

Getting there

How to reach Darjeeling

Bagdogra Airport (IXB) is 70 km and New Jalpaiguri (NJP) the railhead 62 km, both about three hours by shared jeep up the Hill Cart Road; Gangtok is 100 km.

Airport pickups, station transfers and the driver for the days here are all part of what we arrange — including the hour you should leave, which is usually earlier than you think.

Travel tips from our trips

  • Nights drop close to freezing from December to February; carry layers even in April
  • Book Tiger Hill jeeps the previous evening and expect a crowd of vehicles at the viewpoint
  • The toy train joy ride sells out in season; reserve online well ahead on IRCTC
  • Landslides can close the Hill Cart Road in July and August, the heart of the monsoon
  • Buy tea from estate outlets or Nathmulls rather than street sellers if you want graded leaf

Before you ask

Questions we are asked about Darjeeling

When is the best time to visit Darjeeling?
March to May and October to early December for clear mountain views. On the calendar that is Mar–May. We build Darjeeling into a journey inside that window wherever we can; when your dates are fixed outside it, we re-plan the hours of the day around the weather rather than talk you out of the trip.
How many days do you need in Darjeeling?
We plan 3 days in Darjeeling. That is enough for Sunrise over Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill, Steam toy train from Darjeeling to Ghum and the Batasia Loop and Happy Valley Tea Estate factory tour, at a pace that still leaves room for a long lunch. Add a day if you are continuing to Kalimpong and Gangtok.
How do you reach Darjeeling?
Bagdogra Airport (IXB) is 70 km and New Jalpaiguri (NJP) the railhead 62 km, both about three hours by shared jeep up the Hill Cart Road; Gangtok is 100 km. We arrange the transfer and the driver as part of the journey, so you are met on arrival instead of negotiating a taxi at the gate, and the timings are set around when Darjeeling is at its best rather than around the clock.
What is Darjeeling famous for?
Darjeeling is a hill station in West Bengal, East India, best known for Sunrise over Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill, Steam toy train from Darjeeling to Ghum and the Batasia Loop and Happy Valley Tea Estate factory tour. Travellers come for nature, culture, food, photography and romance, and most give it 3 days.
Is Darjeeling good for families?
Darjeeling is planned more often for nature, culture, food, photography and romance than as a family stop, but it works well at a slower pace. 3 days, an early start and one unhurried afternoon is the shape we would suggest, inside the Mar–May window. Tell us who is travelling and we will pace it around them.
