परिचय

West Bengal runs from Sandakphu's Himalayan skyline to the Sundarbans mangroves in about 700 kilometres. Kolkata keeps colonial architecture, trams and an argument in every coffee house, Darjeeling brews the world's most prized tea, Shantiniketan carries Tagore's legacy, and Durga Puja turns the state into an open-air gallery.

Few states change so completely end to end. In the north, Darjeeling sits at about 2,050 metres, with the toy train of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway still hauling up through Batasia Loop and Tiger Hill offering a dawn line of Kangchenjunga; Sandakphu, the state's highest point at 3,636 metres, shows Everest and Kangchenjunga on the same horizon. The Dooars below hold rhino at Jaldapara and elephant at Gorumara. In the south, the Sundarbans spread the world's largest mangrove forest across tidal creeks where Royal Bengal tigers swim between islands. Between the two lies Kolkata, a city of Victoria Memorial marble, the 1943 Howrah Bridge, Kumartuli's clay idol workshops, College Street's second-hand books and an unbroken adda culture. Durga Puja, inscribed by UNESCO in 2021, turns entire neighbourhoods into commissioned art for five days each autumn. Bishnupur's terracotta temples, Murshidabad's Hazarduari and Tagore's Shantiniketan fill the middle of the map. Signature journeys pair Kolkata with Darjeeling, or Kolkata with the Sundarbans and Bishnupur.

September or October, from Mahalaya to Vijaya Dashami in the bright fortnight of Ashwin. The city stays awake from Shashthi onwards; dates follow the lunar calendar.

Durga Puja

Kolkata's five nights of pandal-hopping, dhaak drums and street food, inscribed by UNESCO in 2021. Clay goddesses built in Kumartuli are installed in bamboo-and-cloth pavilions that copy temples, spaceships and slum streets alike, and the whole city walks until dawn to see them.

Kolkata Kathi Roll

A paratha fried with egg, wrapped around skewer-grilled kebab with sliced onion, green chilli and a squeeze of lime, then rolled in paper so you can walk with it. Nizam near New Market claims the invention in the 1930s. Park Street and Esplanade stalls sell them until well after midnight.

Bengali rosogolla in sugar syrupSweet

West Bengal

Rosogolla

Balls of fresh chhena kneaded smooth and boiled in thin sugar syrup until they swell and turn spongy, served cold in their own liquor. Nobin Chandra Das is credited with the Bagbazar version in 1868, and Bengal won a geographical indication for it in 2017. Order two at any Kolkata sweet shop counter.
