Named for Manu, the lawgiver who is said to have stepped ashore here after the flood, Manali is where the Kullu valley narrows and the high Himalaya begins. The town splits into three moods. New Manali around the Mall is bus stands and honeymoon hotels.
Old Manali across the Manalsu nala is stone-and-timber houses, apple trees, cafes playing reggae and the small Manu Temple. Vashisht, on the far bank of the Beas, has sulphur hot springs inside a temple courtyard where villagers still bathe before dawn. The valley's spiritual heart is Hadimba Devi, a four-tiered wooden pagoda built in 1553 inside a deodar forest so dense the light turns green at noon.
A day here can run from a river-crossing zipline at Solang to a slow lunch of trout at a Naggar orchard, then back for evening chai by the Beas as the peaks turn pink. Beyond the town, the Atal Tunnel, opened in 2020 at 9.02 km, has made Sissu and the Chandra river of Lahaul an easy day trip; Rohtang Pass at 3,978 m still needs a permit but rewards with a wall of snow well into July. Naggar Castle, 20 km south, is a five-century-old stack of stone and deodar, and the Roerich estate just above it explains why a Russian painter arrived in 1928 and never left.
Manali matters because it is the doorway: to Spiti over Kunzum, to Leh over five passes, and for most Indians to their first sight of snow.
Best Oct–Jun
March to June for orchards and open passes; October to November for gold larches and clear skies; December to February for snow and skiing at Solang.
Give Manali 4 days and it repays the time; with fewer you are choosing between Hadimba Devi temple in its deodar grove and Old Manali lanes and the Manu Temple. We build the hours around the weather — early starts when it is hot, long afternoons when it is not.

Getting there
Bhuntar (Kullu–Manali) airport 50 km; Joginder Nagar narrow-gauge railhead 165 km, Chandigarh 310 km; overnight Volvo from Delhi 540 km (12–14 h).
Airport pickups, station transfers and the driver for the days here are all part of what we arrange — including the hour you should leave, which is usually earlier than you think.
Next door
Places that join Manali without a long drive — the way a real week is built.

Everything that decides whether a Ladakh drive works: which highway to enter on, how many days to give altitude before Khardung La, what permits cost, when the passes open and close, and a tested twelve-day loop from Leh to Tso Moriri.
