The Government of Ladakh translates Pangong Tso as high grassland lake, though older readings make the word a hollow or a concavity. The water runs 134 km east from Lukung into Tibet in a chain of narrow basins, with only about 45 km of it inside India. It is brackish, fed by no major river and drained by none, and it freezes solid every winter despite the salt.
The Changpa nomads who graze pashmina goats on its shores have known it for centuries; the rest of India discovered it through the closing scene of 3 Idiots, and a replica of the film's yellow scooter now stands on the beach at Spangmik. The drive from Leh takes about five hours: up the Indus to Karu, past Chemrey and Sakti, over Chang La at around 5,360 m, and down through Tangtse to the first view of the water. Nothing prepares you for the colour.
In flat noon light it is a hard chemical blue; under cloud it goes grey, then green, then violet at the edges as the sun drops behind the Pangong range. Bar-headed geese and Brahminy ducks nest along the shore, and kiang, the Tibetan wild ass, graze the flats near Man. Nights in the camps at Spangmik, Man and Merak fall well below zero even in August, and the stars are the compensation.
Pangong matters because it is the end of the road in every sense, the last blue thing before the plateau and the border.

Give Pangong Tso 2 days and it repays the time; with fewer you are choosing between First view of the lake from the Lukung descent and Spangmik beach and the 3 Idiots point. We build the hours around the weather — early starts when it is hot, long afternoons when it is not.

Getting there
Leh airport is 160 km (about 5 hours) via Chang La; there is no railhead; from Nubra the Shyok road is about 150 km.
