The Changthang is the western edge of the Tibetan plateau, a country of salt flats, cold marsh and blue lakes at over 4,500 m, and Tso Moriri is its most beautiful water. The lake is 26 km long and about 4 km wide, fed by snowmelt streams from the Mentok and Lungser peaks and drained by nothing, so its shore is ringed with white mineral crust. Korzok, on the northwest bank at about 4,560 m, is one of the highest permanent villages in the world; its Drukpa Kagyu monastery is about three centuries old and holds the Korzok Gustor festival with masked dances in July or August.

The Changpa who live here follow their herds of pashmina goats and yaks between the lake and the Rupshu valleys, and their black rebo tents still dot the plain. The lake is a Ramsar wetland and one of the few breeding grounds in India of the black-necked crane; bar-headed geese and great crested grebes share the marshes at the southern end, and kiang graze the flats. The drive from Leh follows the Indus through Upshi and the hot springs of Chumathang, crossing at Mahe bridge to climb past Sumdo, about 220 km and seven hours.

The return can loop past Tso Kar, the salt lake, and the Puga geothermal valley to join the Manali highway. A night here is cold, silent and very high; the reward is a dawn with the lake gone still and the peaks doubled in it.

What not to miss in Tso Moriri

  1. Korzok village and Korzok Monastery on the shore
  2. Dawn reflections of Mentok Kangri in the lake
  3. Black-necked cranes and bar-headed geese at the southern marshes
  4. Chumathang hot springs on the Indus road in
  5. Tso Kar salt lake and the Puga valley on the loop out
  6. Changpa rebo tents and pashmina herds on the plain

Getting there

How to reach Tso Moriri

Leh airport is 220 km (about 7 hours) via Upshi, Chumathang and Mahe; there is no railhead; the loop via Tso Kar and Tanglang La joins the Manali to Leh highway.

Airport pickups, station transfers and the driver for the days here are all part of what we arrange — including the hour you should leave, which is usually earlier than you think.

Travel tips from our trips

  • Tso Moriri is over 1,000 m higher than Leh; come only after two or three nights of acclimatisation, and consider a night at Chumathang first.
  • An Inner Line Permit is compulsory and checked at Mahe; foreigners need a Protected Area Permit through a Leh agent.
  • Camping within the wetland is banned; use the homestays and licensed camps at Korzok and keep vehicles off the shore.
  • There is no fuel, ATM or reliable network after Upshi; fill the tank in Leh and carry cash.
  • Roads may stay open into October but nights drop to minus 10 by then; June to September is realistic.

Before you ask

Questions we are asked about Tso Moriri

When is the best time to visit Tso Moriri?
June to September; July to August for Korzok Gustor and nesting birds. On the calendar that is Jun–Sep. We build Tso Moriri into a journey inside that window wherever we can; when your dates are fixed outside it, we re-plan the hours of the day around the weather rather than talk you out of the trip.
How many days do you need in Tso Moriri?
We plan 2 days in Tso Moriri. That is enough for Korzok village and Korzok Monastery on the shore, Dawn reflections of Mentok Kangri in the lake and Black-necked cranes and bar-headed geese at the southern marshes, at a pace that still leaves room for a long lunch. Add a day if you are continuing to Leh and Pangong Tso.
How do you reach Tso Moriri?
Leh airport is 220 km (about 7 hours) via Upshi, Chumathang and Mahe; there is no railhead; the loop via Tso Kar and Tanglang La joins the Manali to Leh highway. We arrange the transfer and the driver as part of the journey, so you are met on arrival instead of negotiating a taxi at the gate, and the timings are set around when Tso Moriri is at its best rather than around the clock.
What is Tso Moriri famous for?
Tso Moriri is a lake in Ladakh, North India, best known for Korzok village and Korzok Monastery on the shore, Dawn reflections of Mentok Kangri in the lake and Black-necked cranes and bar-headed geese at the southern marshes. Travellers come for nature, wildlife, offbeat, photography and adventure, and most give it 2 days.
Is Tso Moriri good for families?
Tso Moriri sits at 4,522 m, so altitude decides it. It suits families with older children who can give a day to acclimatising before anything strenuous. We plan 2 days here, keep the first one slow, and travel in Jun–Sep when the road and the weather are at their most forgiving.
