परिचय

Assam is the Brahmaputra's valley, a green corridor of tea estates, rhino grassland and Vaishnavite monasteries. Kaziranga holds the world's largest population of one-horned rhinoceros, Majuli is a river island of satras and mask makers, and Guwahati's Kamakhya temple draws tantric pilgrims to a hill above the river.

Assam is shaped by one river. The Brahmaputra spreads two to ten kilometres wide across the valley, dropping silt that feeds the tea gardens of Jorhat and Dibrugarh and the tall elephant grass of Kaziranga National Park, where about two-thirds of the world's greater one-horned rhinos live alongside swamp deer, wild buffalo and tigers. Upstream lies Majuli, one of the largest river islands anywhere, where satras founded in the tradition of the fifteenth-century saint Srimanta Sankardeva still teach dance-drama and carve bamboo-and-clay masks. Sivasagar keeps the Ahom kingdom's brick monuments, the oval Rang Ghar pavilion and the subterranean Talatal Ghar, and the Charaideo maidams became a World Heritage Site in 2024. In Guwahati, the Kamakhya temple on Nilachal Hill fills with pilgrims during the Ambubachi Mela. Assam moves at the pace of ferries, tea auctions and Bihu drums. Signature journeys combine Kaziranga safaris, a Majuli ferry, a heritage tea bungalow and a Brahmaputra cruise between Guwahati and Jorhat.

Assamese dancers in muga silk performing Bihu to dhol drums in mid-AprilApr

Bohag Bihu runs for a week from about 14 April, the Assamese new year. Magh Bihu with its bonfires falls in mid-January and the quiet, lamp-lit Kati Bihu in mid-October.

Bihu

Assam's three Bihus mark the farming year, and Bohag Bihu in mid-April is the loud one: dhol and buffalo-horn pepa, dancers in muga silk, cattle bathed in turmeric, and a woven gamosa pressed on everyone you respect. Husori troupes sing their way through the villages.

Assam

Assamese Khar

The first course of an Assamese meal, cooked with kola khar, an alkaline water filtered through the burnt ashes of sun-dried banana peel. It is simmered with raw papaya, pulses or fish, tastes clean and faintly soapy, and is eaten with rice to open the stomach. Try it in Guwahati or on Majuli.
