For centuries Sonamarg was the last halt for caravans leaving Kashmir for Ladakh, Gilgit and the Silk Road beyond the Zoji La. The pass, at about 3,530 m, is still the only road link between the valley and Leh, and until the Z-Morh tunnel opened in early 2025 the meadow itself was cut off by snow every winter. The name refers either to the gold of autumn grass or to the wealth that once passed this way.

The Sindh river comes down fast and grey-green from the mountains, and the village of hotels and tents sits at 2,730 m beside it. The first outing is nearly always the Thajiwas glacier, three kilometres away by pony or on foot, where snow lies in the gullies through summer and children sledge in July. Beyond it the valley opens into the country of the Kashmir Great Lakes trek: Nichnai, the twin lakes of Vishansar and Krishansar, the pass at Gadsar, and finally Gangabal under the peak of Harmukh.

Baltal, 15 km east, is the northern base camp for the Amarnath cave, so in July and August the road fills with pilgrims and the army. Outside those weeks Sonamarg is quiet, cold at night and very bright by day, with rafting on the Sindh between May and September and trout in the side streams. Its role as the hinge between Kashmir and Ladakh gives the place a sense of departure that no other valley in the region has.

What not to miss in Sonamarg

  1. Thajiwas glacier walk or pony ride
  2. Zoji La, the pass road to Ladakh
  3. Vishansar and Krishansar lakes on the Great Lakes trail
  4. Baltal, base of the Amarnath cave route
  5. Sindh river rafting stretch below the village
  6. Zero Point snowfields on the Zoji La approach

Kashmiri Kahwa

Green tea brewed in a copper samovar with saffron, cinnamon bark and green cardamom, poured over crushed almonds and sweetened lightly with honey or sugar. Kashmiris drink it all day and press it on every guest. On a houseboat at Dal Lake or in a Gulmarg guesthouse it does the work of a fire.

Getting there

How to reach Sonamarg

Srinagar airport is 95 km (about 3 hours) via Ganderbal and Kangan; Srinagar is also the nearest railhead; Leh is 350 km east over Zoji La.

Airport pickups, station transfers and the driver for the days here are all part of what we arrange — including the hour you should leave, which is usually earlier than you think.

Travel tips from our trips

  • The Kashmir Great Lakes trek runs only from July to mid-September; go with a licensed operator and carry photo ID for army checkpoints.
  • Zoji La is convoy-controlled and closed by snow from roughly November to April; check BRO (Project Beacon) updates before driving to Ladakh.
  • Nights are cold even in July; bring a fleece and a proper jacket, and expect intermittent mobile network.
  • Baltal fills with Amarnath pilgrims in July and August; book stays well ahead or visit in June or September.
