The journey

What this journey is

एक नज़र में

Everything on this route happened within about a hundred and fifty kilometres of the Ganga plain. At Bodh Gaya, Siddhartha sat through one night under a peepal tree and got up a Buddha; the tree now standing is a descendant, and the polished sandstone Vajrasana beside it was laid by Ashoka in the third century BCE. The brick tower of the Mahabodhi Temple, largely fifth or sixth century, rises 55 metres above pilgrims from Thailand, Bhutan, Tibet, Sri Lanka and Japan, each monastery in town cooking and chanting in its own way. Rajgir was Magadha's capital and the Buddha's rainy-season base: Vulture's Peak, where the Heart Sutra was taught, and the Saptaparni cave where the First Council met after his death to fix what he had said. Nalanda held ten thousand monks and was still standing when Xuanzang studied there in the 630s. Varanasi, seventy kilometres on, is the older world the Buddha argued with, and Sarnath in its suburbs is where he found his first five listeners and set the wheel of dharma turning.

Under the tree, at the hour of the lamps

Met at Gaya airport and driven the 17 km to Bodh Gaya, half an hour. Walk into the Mahabodhi compound in the late afternoon, when the heat lifts and the chanting starts in four languages at once. After breakfast, cross the Falgu to the Sujata Stupa at Bakraur and climb to the Dungeshwari caves where the Buddha starved for six years. Afternoon among the Thai, Bhutanese and Japanese monasteries and the 25-metre Great Buddha.

Climb the stepped path to Griddhakuta, Vulture's Peak, where the Buddha taught the Lotus and Heart Sutras and the view runs across five hills. Below, Venuvana, the bamboo grove King Bimbisara gave to the sangha, and the Saptaparni cave where the First Council met. End on the chairlift to the Vishwa Shanti Stupa, built in 1969.

सवाल-जवाब

What does the price of the Buddhist Circuit of Enlightenment include?
Buddhist Circuit of Enlightenment starts at ₹52,000 per person on twin sharing. Included — Six nights in comfortable hotels at Bodh Gaya, Rajgir and Varanasi, on twin sharing · Daily breakfast and dinner · Private air-conditioned vehicle and driver for the whole circuit, with tolls, parking and driver allowances. Not included — Flights into Gaya and out of Varanasi · Lunches and all beverages. The final figure depends on your dates, the hotel category you choose and how many of you are travelling — message us and we will send a costed, day-by-day plan.
How many people travel on this tour?
We run the Buddhist Circuit of Enlightenment as a private journey for 2 to 12 travellers. There is no coach, no fixed departure and nobody else on your itinerary: you travel with your own driver and are met by local guides along the way. Larger families and small groups of friends are welcome — tell us the number and we will re-cost it.
How difficult is the Buddhist Circuit of Enlightenment?
Easy. The days are built around comfortable drives, unhurried mornings and walking at monuments — nothing technical, no altitude to speak of. If you can manage two or three kilometres on your feet and the odd flight of steps, this journey will not test you. Tell us if you would rather go slower and we will rebuild the pace around you.
When is the best time to travel the Buddhist Circuit of Enlightenment?
October to March — Oct–Mar — is the window we run this route. Those are the months when the weather along it is most reliable and the roads, passes and monuments on the plan are open. Ask us about a date outside that window and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth it rather than sell you a wet week.
Can we change the itinerary?
Yes — this is a starting point, not a fixed departure. Add days, drop a city, swap a fort for a forest, travel with children or with parents who need a slower morning: every plan we send is rebuilt around the days you actually have. Send us the dates and the 7-day route becomes yours.
