The Ganga at Rishikesh is not the brown river of the plains but a fast, cold, jade-coloured torrent, and the town is built around watching it. On the east bank, Swargashram and Ram Jhula are a mile of ashrams, sadhus and stone steps; Parmarth Niketan's evening aarti, sung by young brahmacharis to a giant Shiva seated in the river, fills those steps every dusk. Across the water, Triveni Ghat holds the older, rougher aarti where the whole town comes.

Upstream, the Laxman Jhula of 1929 has stood closed since 2019 while the new Bajrang Setu takes its crowds, and Tapovan's cafes serve buckwheat pancakes to yoga students between classes. The Beatles came in 1968 to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's Chaurasi Kutia, wrote much of the White Album, and left; the ashram, inside Rajaji Tiger Reserve, is now a graffiti-painted ruin you can wander. Adventure begins a few kilometres north: the Shivpuri-to-Rishikesh rafting run through rapids named Roller Coaster and Golf Course, the 83-m Jumpin Heights bungee at Mohan Chatti, cliff jumping at Brahmapuri.

The Neelkanth Mahadev temple sits 32 km up a forest road; Kunjapuri's hilltop shrine gives a sunrise across the Shivaliks to the snow. In March the International Yoga Festival draws teachers from fifty countries. Rishikesh is vegetarian and alcohol-free by law, and the days here have a rhythm of river, chant and stillness that even the traffic cannot break.

Getting there

How to reach Rishikesh

Jolly Grant (Dehradun) airport 20 km; Yog Nagari Rishikesh railhead in town, Haridwar Junction 25 km; Delhi 240 km by road (5–6 h).

Airport pickups, station transfers and the driver for the days here are all part of what we arrange — including the hour you should leave, which is usually earlier than you think.

Travel tips from our trips

  • Rishikesh is strictly vegetarian and alcohol-free; leave the bottles in Dehradun
  • Rafting is closed roughly July to mid-September when the river is in spate; use only Uttarakhand Tourism-registered operators
  • Aarti at Parmarth starts about an hour before sunset; arrive 45 minutes early for a seat on the steps
  • Do not feed or provoke the monkeys on the bridges; hold your phone tight on Ram Jhula
  • Cover shoulders and knees at ashrams and temples; remove footwear on the ghats

Before you ask

Questions we are asked about Rishikesh

When is the best time to visit Rishikesh?
Late September to December and February to April; rafting runs mid-September to June; the International Yoga Festival is in the first week of March. On the calendar that is Feb–Apr. We build Rishikesh into a journey inside that window wherever we can; when your dates are fixed outside it, we re-plan the hours of the day around the weather rather than talk you out of the trip.
How many days do you need in Rishikesh?
We plan 3 days in Rishikesh. That is enough for Ganga aarti at Triveni Ghat and Parmarth Niketan, Ram Jhula, Bajrang Setu and the Swargashram ghats and Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia), at a pace that still leaves room for a long lunch. Add a day if you are continuing to Haridwar and Mussoorie.
How do you reach Rishikesh?
Jolly Grant (Dehradun) airport 20 km; Yog Nagari Rishikesh railhead in town, Haridwar Junction 25 km; Delhi 240 km by road (5–6 h). We arrange the transfer and the driver as part of the journey, so you are met on arrival instead of negotiating a taxi at the gate, and the timings are set around when Rishikesh is at its best rather than around the clock.
What is Rishikesh famous for?
Rishikesh is a river town in Uttarakhand, North India, best known for Ganga aarti at Triveni Ghat and Parmarth Niketan, Ram Jhula, Bajrang Setu and the Swargashram ghats and Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia). Travellers come for spiritual, wellness, adventure and food, and most give it 3 days.
Is Rishikesh good for families?
Rishikesh is planned more often for spiritual, wellness, adventure and food than as a family stop, but it works well at a slower pace. 3 days, an early start and one unhurried afternoon is the shape we would suggest, inside the Feb–Apr window. Tell us who is travelling and we will pace it around them.
