The Great Rann of Kutch is what happens when an arm of the Arabian Sea dries out. Every monsoon the seawater and the Luni river push in and turn some 7,500 square kilometres into a shallow brown lagoon; every winter the water evaporates and leaves a crust of salt so flat and so white that the horizon disappears and camels seem to walk on cloud. The village of Dhordo, 80 kilometres north of Bhuj, is the usual base, and from November the Rann Utsav puts up a tent city there with folk musicians, Kutchi embroiderers and camel carts running out to the salt at dusk.
Go on a full-moon night, when the crust glows and the only sound is wind. Around the white lies the Banni grassland, home to Maldhari herders and to the finest embroidery in India, with Ahir, Rabari, Jat and Mutwa styles each stitched differently and sold in villages like Hodka and Ludiya. Kalo Dungar, the Black Hill at 462 metres, is the highest point in Kutch and the one place you can see the whole Rann curve away.
In the Little Rann to the east live the last wild asses on earth, and in the far white, greater flamingos nest in mud cones each winter.
Best Nov–Feb
November to February, when the salt is dry and nights are cold; plan around a full moon.
Give Rann of Kutch 3 days and it repays the time; with fewer you are choosing between White Rann at Dhordo on a full-moon night and Kalo Dungar, the Black Hill, at 462 metres. We build the hours around the weather — early starts when it is hot, long afternoons when it is not.

Getting there
Bhuj Airport is 80 km from Dhordo with flights from Mumbai and Delhi; Bhuj is the railhead; Ahmedabad is 400 km by NH27.
Airport pickups, station transfers and the driver for the days here are all part of what we arrange — including the hour you should leave, which is usually earlier than you think.

India is not one climate but six, from a Himalayan cold desert at 3,500 metres to hills that take eleven metres of rain a year. Here is the whole calendar, month by month, with the regions, roads and parks that open and close with it.
