Namdapha was declared a national park in 1983 and a tiger reserve the same year, but it belongs to nobody in particular: 1,985 square kilometres of Changlang district rising from 200 metres on the Noa-Dihing river to 4,571 metres at Daphabum on the Myanmar border, with lowland tropical rainforest at the bottom and rhododendron and snow at the top. That span is why it is the only reserve on earth with tiger, leopard, clouded leopard and snow leopard, and why hoolock gibbons, red pandas, hornbills of four species, the white-winged wood duck and a flying squirrel found nowhere else share the same map. There are no safari circuits.

From Miao, the gateway town of Singpho, Tangsa and Chakma settlements, a rough road runs 26 kilometres to Deban, where a forest rest house sits on a bluff above the river and everything beyond is on foot: dugout boat across the Noa-Dihing at dawn, then the trail to Haldibari, Hornbill camp and the bubbling sulphur springs of Bulbulia, sleeping in tents under a canopy that drips with orchids and leeches. A day begins with gibbons whooping across the valley, passes in wet green silence broken by hornbill wingbeats, and ends by a fire with Lisu porters who walk this forest to their villages at Gandhigram and Vijaynagar, days away on foot. Namdapha is India at its wildest and least visited, and it asks for patience, rain gear and a good pair of boots.

What not to miss in Namdapha

  1. Deban Forest Rest House on a bluff above the Noa-Dihing river
  2. Hoolock gibbons calling at dawn along the Haldibari trail
  3. Hornbill camp and the great, wreathed and rufous-necked hornbills
  4. Bulbulia's bubbling sulphur springs deep in the forest
  5. The Miao reserve forest road and Singpho villages along it
  6. Gandhigram and Vijaynagar, the Lisu settlements at the park's far end

Getting there

How to reach Namdapha

Dibrugarh (Mohanbari) airport is about 155 km from Miao and Tinsukia the nearest major railhead (about 115 km), the road running via Margherita; Deban is 26 km further on a rough forest track.

Airport pickups, station transfers and the driver for the days here are all part of what we arrange — including the hour you should leave, which is usually earlier than you think.

Travel tips from our trips

  • Indian visitors need an Inner Line Permit and foreigners a Protected Area Permit; entry permits and camping fees are issued at the field director's office in Miao.
  • There is no lodging inside beyond Deban; trekking means tents, porters and a cook arranged through the forest department or a local operator.
  • Leeches are relentless outside the driest months; wear leech socks and carry salt.
  • There is no phone network past Miao; share your dates with someone and carry cash.
  • Rain can fall in any month; waterproof everything and keep a spare day for the river crossing.

That is enough for Deban Forest Rest House on a bluff above the Noa-Dihing river, Hoolock gibbons calling at dawn along the Haldibari trail and Hornbill camp and the great, wreathed and rufous-necked hornbills, at a pace that still leaves room for a long lunch. Add a day if you are continuing to Majuli and Kaziranga.

What is Namdapha famous for?
Namdapha is a wildlife park in Arunachal Pradesh, Northeast India, best known for Deban Forest Rest House on a bluff above the Noa-Dihing river, Hoolock gibbons calling at dawn along the Haldibari trail and Hornbill camp and the great, wreathed and rufous-necked hornbills. Travellers come for wildlife, adventure, offbeat and nature, and most give it 4 days.
Is Namdapha good for families?
Namdapha is planned more often for wildlife, adventure, offbeat and nature than as a family stop, but it works well at a slower pace. 4 days, an early start and one unhurried afternoon is the shape we would suggest, inside the Nov–Mar window. Tell us who is travelling and we will pace it around them.
