Tawang was Tibetan country for centuries, part of the Tawang Tract that the McMahon Line of 1914 placed in India and that Indian administration reached only in 1951; the sixth Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso, was born at Urgelling just below the town in 1683, and the fourteenth passed through here on his 1959 escape. The monastery, Galden Namgey Lhatse, was founded in 1680 to 1681 by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso at the wish of the fifth Dalai Lama, and its whitewashed walls hold some 450 monks, a three-storey dukhang with an eight-metre gilded Buddha, and a library of Kangyur scriptures written in gold. Getting there is the journey: two days up from the Assam plains through Bomdila and Dirang, over the 4,170-metre Sela Pass where prayer flags snap beside a black lake, and down past the Jaswant Garh memorial to a rifleman of 1962 and the Nuranang waterfall roaring beside the road.

A day in Tawang begins with the low chant of morning puja and butter lamps in the dukhang, continues by shared Sumo to Bumla on the China border and Sangetsar Lake, where drowned pines stand in water created by a 1950 earthquake, and ends at the war memorial as the sound-and-light show comes on and the cold drops hard. Monpa houses, the Ani gompas above town, yak herds on the passes and the Torgya cham dances of January make it more than a viewpoint. Tawang is the far edge of Buddhist India, and it feels like it.

Getting there

How to reach Tawang

Tezpur (Salonibari) airport is about 320 km and Guwahati 450 km by road via Bomdila and Sela, a two-day drive; Rangapara North/Tezpur is the railhead, and Pawan Hans helicopters fly Guwahati to Tawang on select days.

Airport pickups, station transfers and the driver for the days here are all part of what we arrange — including the hour you should leave, which is usually earlier than you think.

Travel tips from our trips

  • Indian citizens need an Inner Line Permit, applied for online on the state's e-ILP portal; foreigners need a Protected Area Permit, usually arranged through a registered operator.
  • Bumla and Sangetsar require an additional army permit issued in Tawang the day before; the roads close after heavy snowfall.
  • You gain 3,000 m in two days from Guwahati; sleep at Dirang or Bomdila en route and go slow on day one.
  • Sela Pass can shut for days in December to February snow; keep a buffer day and warm layers even in May.
  • Walk clockwise in the monastery, leave shoes outside the dukhang and use no flash on murals; the monastery is open from dawn to dusk.

Before you ask

Questions we are asked about Tawang

When is the best time to visit Tawang?
March to June and September to November; December to February for snow if Sela stays open. On the calendar that is Mar–Jun. We build Tawang into a journey inside that window wherever we can; when your dates are fixed outside it, we re-plan the hours of the day around the weather rather than talk you out of the trip.
How many days do you need in Tawang?
We plan 3 days in Tawang. That is enough for Morning prayers in the dukhang of Tawang Monastery beneath the eight-metre gilded Buddha, Sela Pass at 4,170 m and its frozen Sela lake and Nuranang (Jang) Falls thundering 100 m beside the Tawang road, at a pace that still leaves room for a long lunch. Add a day if you are continuing to Dirang & Bomdila and Guwahati & Kamakhya.
How do you reach Tawang?
Tezpur (Salonibari) airport is about 320 km and Guwahati 450 km by road via Bomdila and Sela, a two-day drive; Rangapara North/Tezpur is the railhead, and Pawan Hans helicopters fly Guwahati to Tawang on select days. We arrange the transfer and the driver as part of the journey, so you are met on arrival instead of negotiating a taxi at the gate, and the timings are set around when Tawang is at its best rather than around the clock.
What is Tawang famous for?
Tawang is a monastery in Arunachal Pradesh, Northeast India, best known for Morning prayers in the dukhang of Tawang Monastery beneath the eight-metre gilded Buddha, Sela Pass at 4,170 m and its frozen Sela lake and Nuranang (Jang) Falls thundering 100 m beside the Tawang road. Travellers come for spiritual, adventure, nature and photography, and most give it 3 days.
Is Tawang good for families?
Tawang sits at 3,048 m, so altitude decides it. It suits families with older children who can give a day to acclimatising before anything strenuous. We plan 3 days here, keep the first one slow, and travel in Mar–Jun when the road and the weather are at their most forgiving.
