Kanyakumari, once written Cape Comorin, takes its name from the virgin goddess Kanya Kumari, who waited here for Shiva and whose temple on the shore has been a pilgrimage since Sangam times; the diamond in her nose ring is said to have guided ships. The geography is the draw. Five hundred metres offshore, a granite outcrop holds the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, built in 1970 on the rock where Swami Vivekananda meditated for three days in December 1892 before sailing for Chicago; beside it stands the statue of Thiruvalluvar, 133 feet for the 133 chapters of the Tirukkural, finished in 2000.
A short ferry runs between the two. Mornings belong to the sunrise viewpoint on the eastern shore, when the horizon over the Bay of Bengal turns copper and the fishing fleet is already out; evenings send everyone back for sunset on the same beach, a rarity in India. Behind the town the Western Ghats end abruptly and wind farms turn on the ridges towards Nagercoil.
Add Vattakottai, a squat eighteenth-century Travancore sea fort of black granite; the Gandhi Mandapam, built so that a shaft of sun falls on the memorial stone each 2 October; and Suchindram's Thanumalayam Temple, 13 kilometres north, whose stone pillars ring in musical notes.
Best Oct–Feb
October to February; the Chitra Pournami full moon in April brings sunset and moonrise together.
Give Kanyakumari 2 days and it repays the time; with fewer you are choosing between Sunrise and sunset from the same shore at the three-sea confluence and Ferry to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial. We build the hours around the weather — early starts when it is hot, long afternoons when it is not.

Getting there
Thiruvananthapuram airport is 90 km northwest; Kanyakumari station is the last stop on the line, with Nagercoil Junction 20 km away.
Airport pickups, station transfers and the driver for the days here are all part of what we arrange — including the hour you should leave, which is usually earlier than you think.

Places that join Kanyakumari without a long drive — the way a real week is built.
