Unakoti means one less than a crore, and the name arrives with a story: Shiva was walking to Kashi with ninety-nine lakh, ninety-nine thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine gods, told them all to rise before dawn, and when only he woke he cursed the rest to stone. Tripuri tellings prefer the sculptor Kallu Kumhar, who begged to travel with Shiva and Parvati and was set the test of carving a crore of images in one night, and finished one short. What survives on the Raghunandan hillside near Kailashahar are enormous Shaivite reliefs cut into the rock face and free-standing stone figures scattered down a ravine, broadly dated to the seventh to ninth centuries and unlike anything else in eastern India.
The centrepiece is Unakotishwara Kal Bhairava, a face some nine metres high wearing an embossed headdress, with Durga on her lion and Ganga on a makara carved on either side. Three colossal Ganeshas stand nearby, and Nandi bulls sit half-sunk in the earth with only their horns and shoulders showing. A stream drops through the ravine below the carvings.
On ordinary days it is quiet, green and mossy, with the faces going dark under monsoon damp; at Ashokashtami in April it fills with pilgrims. India placed the site on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list in 2022.

Agartala's MBB airport is 178 km away; Kumarghat is the nearest railhead at about 20 km, and Kailashahar town is 8 km from the carvings.

Travel tips from our trips
- The site is 8 km from Kailashahar; take a shared auto or hire a car, as there is no public transport to the gate.
- Steps down the ravine are steep, mossy and slippery after rain, so wear grip shoes and avoid the peak monsoon months.
- Bring water and a hat; there are only a couple of small stalls and almost no shade on the upper path.
- Agartala is 178 km away over about five hours of road, so either start very early or stay a night in Kailashahar.
- It is a living Shaivite shrine as well as an archaeological site: do not climb on the carvings, and remove shoes where asked.
